East Devon Golf League – Exeter v Bovey Tracey

Neil Whittaker skippered the EDGL team at Honiton on Saturday 12th July against a strong Bovey Tracey side. The course was very well presented but proved tricky on a sunbaked day. The Exeter side put up a brave fight with some very close matches, unfortunately Bovey managed to tip the balance on some crucial holes which proved to turn the match in their favour. The result was a 3.5 to 1.5 loss. On a plus side for the day it was good to blood two new players for our EDGL squad, Darren McCabe and Darryn Lake. Well done boys.

Dartmoor League- Stover v Exeter

On a extremely hot Sunday the team travelled to Stover to play the fifth match, of 2025, in Division 1.

Captain Simon Courtney commented, ‘the boys put in a fantastic performance on a course with two very different 9 holes. With the greens and course conditions very different on the front and back 9.’

The matches were as always very competitive and extremely tight. With wins for Simon Courtney and Paul Fielder and James Kane partnering the ever reliable John Fairman. A halved match involving Ian Lake and Jack Parry secured a commanding 2.5 lead. However, despite the strong start a battling Stover managed wins over the final two pairings of Neil Whittaker/Justin Powlesland and Bobby Wickes/Darren McCabe leaving the fixture drawn at 2.5/2.5.

Exeter currently placed 5th in the League with three to play and only two points separate Exeter from second placed Stover.

Junior Open

The club held its annual Junior Open on Sunday with 75 junior boys and girls from across Devon & Somerset competing in a stableford format. Exeter GCC was well represented and had some good results on the day. Cousins Oliver and Harry Delve were amongst the many young prize winners at the event kindly sponsored by Porsche Exeter.

Harry, on the right, won the Division 2 with an excellent 41 stableford points, while Oliver was just one point behind as he finished runner up. Olly Champion came 2nd in Division 1 and Josh Murphy won the scratch event after recording a fine gross 70.

The golf course was in fantastic condition although the weather proved a test for the young golfers.

Many thanks must go to Vic and Mary Fox who very generously supplied, and ran a halfway house for the competitors and made sure every player was fed and watered.

Parker Trophy Quarter Final – The duel in the sun!

Last night we played the Quarter Final of the Parker Trophy against Teignmouth at Tavistock. Both sides fielded their most inform players and it was set to be a huge battle of local rivals.

First out was Simon House and current Club Champion Joe Charchafchi, playing well, they held a 1-hole lead for most of the front nine. Teignmouth had some luck in the back nine and eventually had a run of holes that went their way right at the end of the match. Exeter lost 3&2

Second out was the pairing of Scott Collins and Alex Worthington, who were 2 down after 2 holes but dug deep to bring the score back to 1up just before halfway. It was then nip and tuck then until the 17th where the experienced Exeter pair extended their lead to seal victory and leave the tie unbelievably poised. Exeter won 2&1.

Our last pairing of Harrison Greenberry and Chris Haggar were taking on county squad players Leigh Jones and George Robinson, which was always set to be a fantastic match. This match was nail biting with each pair showing some fine form just at the right time.

As the match went all square up the last, all players and spectators were gathered to watch the finale as the sun started to fade. With 124 yards out after Harrison’s drive, Chris Haggar put the ball to 2 feet, with the putt conceded, the tie was almost ours! George Robinson then sunk an unbelievable 20-foot downhill putt to take the tie to extra holes… what a match, sadly the match was then won by Teignmouth on the first extra hole but what a spectacle those present witnessed!

Overall match result – Exeter lost 2-1

The Sheelah Creasey team had an excellent result in their home match against East Devon, coming away with a resounding win. Their captain, Maggie Wayte commented, ‘This was such a great team effort from everyone. The team is going from strength to strength with every match they play.’

Result – Exeter win – 4 ½ – ½.

This was followed up by an equally impressive result against the team from Woodbury. Maggie Wayte was full of praise for her team of the day, which included: Louise James, Jenny Garner, Linda Kingdon, Liz Turner, Gill Newbery, Jane Scoble and Lorna Brown.

Result – Exeter win 4 ½ – ½.
