Walk through our gym on any day and you’ll find people training for completely different reasons:
A Hyrox athlete shaving minutes off their time.
A bodybuilder chasing a new PB.
A runner building strength to stay injury-free.
A 17-year-old learning to lift with confidence.
A member in their seventies staying strong, mobile and independent.
None of them train the same way.
All of them belong here.
Our members range in age from 16 to over 90, creating a community that’s as diverse as it is welcoming. Whether you’re taking your first steps into fitness or have been training for decades, you’ll never feel out of place.

WARNING - IT'LL TAKE OVER YOUR LIFE
Most people worry they’ll struggle to make it to the gym.
Our members have the opposite problem.
One workout turns into a swim. A quick coffee becomes lunch on the terrace. Before you know it, you’re back the next day for a class, a sauna or to catch up with friends. It’s a pretty good problem to have.

Here`s why you shouldn`t "just get the holidays out of the way" before you start...
Every year, people tell themselves they`ll begin in September. Or after the next holiday. Or once life calms down.
But the truth is, there will always be another reason to wait.
Starting before your holiday doesn`t mean chasing perfection. It means building momentum. Even a few weeks of strength training can boost your energy, improve your confidence and make everyday activities feel easier. You`ll head off feeling fitter, stronger and more motivated—not like you`re starting from scratch when you get back.
And when you return? You`re far more likely to pick up where you left off than if you never started at all.
There`s no perfect time. Just the decision to begin.
At Exeter Golf & Country Club, our Personal Trainers create programmes that fit around your life, your goals and your schedule - whether you`re a complete beginner or ready to take your training to the next level.
Start now. Your future self will thank you.

No long drive. No countryside detour. Just a few minutes from Exeter city centre and you’re here. ☀️
Whether it’s coffee and cake, lunch on the terrace, afternoon tea or simply soaking up the view, Wear Park is the kind of place that makes you forget how close you are to the city.

Lloyd Rowett Trophy retained with 9–3 victory over Bigbury
Exeter Golf & Country Club successfully retained the Lloyd Trophy after a convincing 9–3 aggregate victory over Bigbury Golf Club following the second leg of the annual matchplay competition on Friday 24 July.
Heading into the home fixture with a 4–2 advantage from the first leg at Bigbury, Exeter produced another impressive performance, winning the return match 5–1 to seal the trophy.
The day began with both teams enjoying breakfast together before heading out onto the course in the sunshine, reflecting the friendly spirit that has become a hallmark of this long-standing fixture. The Lloyd Rowett Trophy is contested annually between Exeter Golf & Country Club and Bigbury Golf Club, with better-ball pairs competing over home and away legs to decide the overall winners.
Exeter’s pairings were:
* Justin Powlesland & Darren Everett
* Neil Whittaker & Alan Cleave
* Steve Westaway & Chris Brooking
* Andy Rockey & Charlie Kislingbury
* Jamie Broom & Darryn Lake
* Simon House & Simon Courtney
Men’s Captain Justin Powlesland said: “The team were brilliant and won the home leg 5–1, which meant an overall win of 9–3 to retain the trophy. The match was played in a brilliant spirit, as it was designed to be.”

Still chasing a new PB? It may not be another long run that’s missing from your training plan.
Adding just one Matrix Sprint 8 session each week can help improve your speed, endurance and VO₂ max, so when you head out on your next run, your race pace feels easier and you’re better equipped to push for a personal best.
In just 20 minutes, you’ll challenge your body with short bursts of maximum effort followed by recovery, helping you build the fitness that steady-paced running alone can’t always deliver.
Whether you’re training for a 5K, 10K, half marathon, Hyrox or simply want to become a stronger runner, Sprint 8 could be the smartest addition to your routine.
Not sure where to start?
Try these Sprint 8 settings:
- Beginner: 8–10 km/h
- Intermediate: 10–12 km/h
- Experienced: 12–14 km/h
- Advanced: 14–16+ km/h
Recovery: Walk at 4–6 km/h or jog at 6–10 km/h – you should feel ready to push again, but not fully recovered.
Gradient: Keep it at 1% to better replicate outdoor running. If you’re new to Sprint 8, 0% is absolutely fine while you build confidence.
Remember, Sprint 8 is all about your maximum effort. If your sprint speed is lower than these suggestions but you’re working close to your limit with good form, you’re doing it right.
Ask any of the fitness team to help set up as it’s fully customisable!
Save this post for your next workout and let us know how you get on! 💪

Top tips for playing Hole 3 from our Director of Golf - with legendary sports commentator Steve Rider talking you through every shot, you`ll arrive on the tee with plenty of confidence.
At 517 yards, Hole 3 may look like a straightforward par 5, but there`s more to it than first meets the eye. The ideal tee shot is just inside the two right hand fairway bunkers, keeping well clear of the trees lining the left.
Long hitters may fancy taking on the green in two, but the percentage play is to lay up short of the gully and trust a well struck wedge to set up a birdie chance. Your approach needs to be precise too, with diagonal bunkers waiting to catch anything under hit and two greenside bunkers protecting the angled green. Aim for the middle to left side of the putting surface for the safest route home.
Watch the reel, take in Steve`s commentary, then see how you get on next time you`re standing on the 3rd tee.
