Dartmoor League – Exeter v Bovey Castle: Sunday 25th August
Exeter faced Bovey Castle at Exeter on Sunday in the DML. Captained by Justin Vinney, this was always going to be a challenging fixture with both clubs fighting for the top spot in league one. Exeter picked a strong team knowing Bovey Castle would also play a competitive side. Exeter was in fantastic condition with the greens receiving compliments from both sides. The weather was great despite the strong breeze. First pairing Mark & Ollie Champion started very well, taking a good lead into the back nine. The Bovey pairing found their game on the back nine playing some impressive golf, the match was halved on the 18th, perhaps a fair result overall. Second pairing, Martin Pitcher & David Hancock, played some solid golf but were up against a strong Bovey pairing that proved too strong on the day, being several under par gross in their better ball score. Third pairing Justin Vinney & Simon Courtney, played very well proving too good for the Bovey pairing, picking up another valuable point. Forth match Steve Sheldon & Darren Thorpe were involved in a great battle, the match went back and forth with great golf being played by both pairings, several holes were won with gross birdies. The match was won on the last with Exeter member Ben More holing a fantastic 20-foot birdie putt on the 18th to secure the win, having previously won 17 with another birdie. Final pairing James Kane & Ian Lake were very solid on the day with their match never in doubt, another good win for Exeter.
With one league game to go, it is all to play for, with the final league match to be played at home at Stover. The next match is the semi-final of the DML Cup on Saturday 31st August against Woodbury at Dainton.
