September Golf Round Up

WINNERS!

Exeter are the Exe League 2025 league winners!

Exeter travelled to East Devon Golf Club on Sunday 21st September in the final fixture of the Exe League for 2025. Going in to the final day, it was extremely close with Exeter, Tiverton and East Devon all with a chance to win the league

Exeter were very confident in their six pairs but knew it was going to be a tough ask to beat East Devon on their own track. The team were aware that if East Devon finished first on the day, a 2nd place would secure a league win for Exeter.

The weather stayed dry and sunny but a challenging wind prevailed. The course was in fantastic condition and the greens were great although there were some very tricky pin positions.

Pairs:
Foursomes
Scott Collins/Alex Worthington 29 points
James Delve/Dan Bullock 31 points
James Mullins/Gav Roberts 32 points

4BBB
Ross Hollingdale/Simon Carter 41 points
Justin Powlesland/Mark Crouch 34 points
Iain Crombie/Patrick Williams 40 points

On the day East Devon scored the highest combined Stableford points, with 215. Exeter finished 2nd with 207, Tiverton 3rd with 202 points and Woodbury 4th with 196 points.

Overall league standings were:
Exeter 32
East Devon 30
Tiverton 29
Woodbury 21

Captain, Justin Powlesland, said: “What a fantastic season we had as a team. Myself and Iain Crombie would like to thank each and every person that played and supported us in the Exe League. Going in to the final, we hoped that we could do enough to win us the league so to get it over the line was brilliant. After winning the league last year, it would be great to see if we can do 3 in a row next year!”

Men’s Golf Captains Away Day

On 27th and 28th September, Men’s Golf Captain, James Mullins, led a team to take on Vice Captain, Justin Powlesland, in the ‘Captain’s Away Day – Ryder Cup’ at St Mellion in Cornwall. Forty Exeter Golf and Country Club golfers took part in the 2 day event, with James captaining the European team and Justin captaining the USA team.

Day 1 was played on the Nicklaus championship course, which is very tight, with all players knowing that they needed to keep the ball in play in order to try and bring a point home for their respective teams. After a great first day, the scores were 5.5 to Europe and 4.5 to the US team which meant it was all to play for in day 2.

After a fantastic evening meal and plenty of drinks, resulting in a few hazy heads in the morning, the US team were perked up by ‘goody bags’ full of energy drinks and fuel to keep them going. These bags seem to spur the US team on and they were all in fine form on day 2 and won the day convincingly with a 8.5 to 1.5 victory.  This meant that the overall score was 13 to 7 in favour of the USA team. So the USA team were the ‘Ryder Cup’ winners!

James Mullins and Justin Powlesland thank all the golfers for joining them for a fun weekend, and are looking forward to next years trip already!
