Exeter Golf and Country Club played host to a wonderful day of tennis on Sunday 14th June, as 40 players from clubs across Devon came together for the Women’s Charity Cup. The event was a resounding success both on and off the court, raising awareness and money for the tennis section’s charity for this year, The Elena Baltacha Foundation.
A special mention must go to Sidmouth, who showed tremendous support by bringing no fewer than five pairs to the competition — a fantastic contribution to what was a brilliantly well-attended field.
The day’s play was split across three grades, with some highly competitive matches throughout. Congratulations to all the winners: Catherine Hayman and Wendy Smith took the honours in the A Grade, Sally Rogers and Liz Partridge claimed victory in the B Grade, and Joanna Kinder and Jill Shorthouse triumphed in the C Grade. Prizes were presented by Penelope Moor, a member of the club and trustee of the Elena Baltacha Foundation, who was in attendance to enjoy the day’s action.
The event was held in aid of The Elena Baltacha Foundation, a charity dedicated to giving more children the opportunity to get involved in tennis — a cause that clearly resonated with everyone present. In a further highlight of the day, a cheque for over £8,000 was presented to FORCE (Friends of the Oncology and Radiotherapy Centre, Exeter), recognising last year’s remarkable fundraising efforts. Nigel Acheson (Patron of the charity) and Ceri Bastyan (Fundraising Officer) were in attendance to be presented the cheque by Vanessa Killick, women’s tennis captain.

Nno review of the day would be complete without mentioning the afternoon’s added excitement — with Emma Raducanu locked in a nail-biting second set in the women’s singles final at Queen’s, more than a few eyes may have drifted away from the courts momentarily!
Keeping everyone well-fuelled throughout the day was the magnificent lunch and refreshments provided by Vanessa, whose catering and organisation of the whole day drew praise from all who attended.
The tennis section extends its thanks to the generous sponsors whose support made the event possible: Lexus, Darts Farm, Rodney Spiller Wealth Management, and Andrew Killick.
Sunday’s event marked the third annual Women’s Charity Cup. With another planned for September next year, and an inaugural men’s event set for September 2026, the club looks forward to welcoming more players to raise money for such worthwhile causes.
