Success at the Exeter Open Team Squash Event

Match report by Mike Harris, Head of Squash and Racketball

For the second year Exeter Golf and Country Club and the Devon and Exeter Squash Club hosted the Exeter Open 3 Player Team Squash tournament on Saturday 3rd June.

The 22 teams (with players coming from all over the South West,) were split across 4 different Grades between the two clubs, with all sides getting three or four fixtures each on the day.

The aim of the game was not just to win your match, but to also do it for as good a points difference as possible, as rather than wins counting toward your side’s overall standing, it was in fact every point you accumulated that made the difference! This was particularly telling in the A Grade event, where the 1st and 2nd placed sides were divided by just a single point at the end of the event!

It was great to have sides come from all over the area, with teams from Bristol, Wales and Wellington mixing in with Devon based sides. The playing standard went from semi pro players in the A Grade, through to club team and box players in the D Grade, making for a great variety of players and abilities.

In the end though there could only be one winner and congratulations to the teams who managed to come out on top of their respective Grades. They were:

A Grade: Winners – Sheriff’s Select, Runners Up – Snell’s Squad

B Grade: Winners – Dunford’s Destroyers, Runners Up – the Welsh Wizzes

C Grade: Winners – The Moustachateers, Runners Up – The Neon Knights (an all D&E battle)

D Grade: Winners – Newton Abbot C (Pictured in Blue Red and Black), Runners Up – EGCC (Pictured in Black Pink and Blue)

Thank you to the D&E for partnering up with us and providing some great food and a fun player’s party after the matches were finished.
