PSA professional championship and graded tournament weekend

Match report by Jon Sharpe, Men’s Squash and Racketball Captain.

Exeter Golf and Country Club hosted its Annual PSA professional Squash championships and mixed graded tournament on the 18th – 20th August.

Always popular, the pro event drew competitors from all over the world, from as far away as Pakistan. The Graded events, pitching players of varying standards against each other from Grade A to Grade E attracted players from all over the UK and had a great mix of men and women playing against each other.

The Pro event was one of the most evenly matched events we’ve had, with England U19 and European No1 Jonah Bryant, beating the 2nd seed and Rhys Evans of Wales beating the No1 seed in their semi finals to face each other in the final. Jonah Bryant, winning in a high paced, competitive final 3-1 in front of a packed crowd.

The A Grade was hotly contested with Exeter Golf and Country Club’s Ioan Sharpe, Wales U19 No1 beating his main rival, England U19 top 10 player Billy Whalley in another fast paced, exciting final.

The club had more success with Lauren Brown, Devon U19’s girls No1, winning the E Grade!

Thanks to all the sponsors, John and Polly Woodhams, Martyn Newbery (Allparts SW), Rob Insall, David Robertson and James Rockingham for their amazing support.

A great weekend had by all and a first class event organised by Mike Harris, supported by the committee over the weekend.
