Men’s Golf Captain’s Golf Days

The Men’s Golf Captains Day Order Of Merit competition took place on Saturday 2nd July with the Ladies’ Golf Day taking place on Tuesday raising over £3500 for Devon Freewheelers, aka Blood Bikes.

Steve Sheldon, the Men’s Golf Captain for 2022 welcomed over 180 golfers to the course on Saturday, keeping them fed and watered with a pasty and pint on the 8th, sponsored by St Austell Brewery’s Korev lager and Tribute ale.

Steve Buchannan shot an impressive net 64 on the day, just beating Paul Champion on countback.

Mary Ellis won the Ladies’ Golf Day with an very impressive 41 points.

Steve Sheldon said, “Congratulations to Steve! Steve is a relatively new member having joined from Tiverton Golf Club and is one of our newly appointed marshalls/starters on the 1st. I am looking forward to presenting the Captain’s Trophy and prizes to the winners on my Black and Gold Captain’s Day and Pros Day evening on Saturday 30th July – remember to book tickets!”

Steve thanked St Austell Breweries, as the main sponsor of the event. As well as as supplying deckchairs and a bar on the 8th hole, they kept a flow of Korev and Tribute on tap throughout the day for the golfers. St Austell Brewery also supplied merchandise on the day and donated two luxurious Cornish themed hampers, complete with 4 ball vouchers for use at over 12 premier Devon and Cornwall golf courses including Trevose. Each hamper is worth over £500 and will be auctioned on the Black and Gold themed night later this month.

Steve said, “Thank you to the club for letting us use all of the facilities and all of the staff who supported us throughout the day.  I also wish to mention some people in person, without whom I could not have managed the day.  So a great big thank you to Lisa Newbury and Darren Everett who worked tirelessly to support me and plan the event.  The Pro Shop team also provided invaluable  support throughout the day, particularly Chloe who helped me make up over 180 gift bags the night before.  Thank you to Daryl from the club’s Maintenance Team who was constantly fetching and carrying all day and to David, one of our chefs, who kept us all fed with an endless supply of pasties.  My appreciation also goes to Vic Fox our Club President, who along with Darren, kindly generated and provided all of the blind auction 4 ball vouchers.  Lastly, I would like to thank my wife Lynn, who has seen more of the golf club in the last few weeks than she has in the past few years!”

Steve’s charity of the year, Devon Freewheelers, aka Blood Bikes, were there as ever, providing support on the day.

The golf days raised over £3,500, which combined with other fundraising events, takes the running total to almost £13,000.

Steve said, “Devon Freewheelers is a  wonderful charity, providing vital support to the NHS in transporting blood to wherever it’s needed most. I cannot thank all the golfers and my fellow members enough for helping me and the Ladies’ Golf Captain, Chris Norton, to raise funds for this charity which means so much to us.”

Steve thanked all the golf clubs for donating prizes and thanked the golfers for placing such generous bids.
