With the golf season off to a flying start weather-wise, the Men’s Golf Teams have been playing county-wide with varying success, but great golf days nonetheless. Here’s the latest round up of golf news in April.

Round One of the Dartmoor League – Exeter versus Bovey Castle
The fixture was considered, by Team Captain Simon Courtney, to be the hardest game of the season for Exeter at Bovey, the reigning champions. As expected the matches proved tough going from the start with the Exeter Captain receiving messages that the Exeter pairings were down in all match’s. The team continued to battle and take the games as far as possible but the hosts were too strong on the day .
Results: Steve Sheldon/Darren Thorpe, Justin Vinney/Eddo and James Kane/Bobby Wickes all losing 4 and 3. John Bamford/Ben Reynolds taking it nearly all the way before losing 2 and 1. Simon Courtney/Paul Fielder played a cracking match being one up then 3 down but winning the last few holes secured a draw and grab half a point.
Final score: Bovey Castle 4.5 Â Exeter 0.5.

Round One of the East Devon Golf League – Exeter versus Crediton at Axe Cliff Golf Club.Â
Unfortunately Exeter were well beaten by Crediton going down 3.5 to 1.5 with Crediton gaining a further 2 point win bonus
Team Captain, Jamie Broom said ‘Crediton will be a force to be reckoned with this season having gained lots of Fingle Glens low handicap players.’

Harry Spencer Trophy Winner
Congratulations to Matthew Jose on winning the first silverware of the season, the Harry Spencer Trophy, with a score of 43 points.
Our Men’s Golf Captain, James Mullins presented Matthew with the trophy at Friday’s Ball Draw. 🙌
A big well done!
Exe League Match Report – at EGCC
We hosted the opening round of the 2025 Exe League on Sunday 27th April. As reigning champions, there was plenty of expectation on this year’s team to begin the defence of the title strongly. The format consists of three Foursomes matches and three 4BBB pairings. In Foursomes the pairing of Rodin Mackay and Andy Shepherd were the standout performers, scoring an excellent 37 points—the top Foursomes score of the day and the only one under par.
In the 4BBB matches, a special mention goes to Alec Holifield, who stepped in at the last minute (due to a handicap admin error by VC Crombie). Holifield and his partner Patrick Williams combined well to score 41 points, the highlight of this being Alec’s eagle 2 on 17. Pete Beaven also deserves a mention for a great performance which included 3 2s!
Exeter finished the day with a very respectable 210 Stableford points. This put us second overall, just four points behind the day’s winners, East Devon.Â
Foursomes Scores:
Scott Collins/James Mullins – 34 pts
Rodin Mackay/Andy Shepherd – 37 pts
Dan Bullock/Olly Champion – 23 pts
4BBB Scores
James Delve/Martin Pitcher – 33 pts
Iain Crombie/Pete Beaven – 42 pts
Alec Hollifield/Patrick Williams – 41 pts
