Club President’s Day Success Raises £471 for Charity
Members braved soaring temperatures on Wednesday, 28 May, to support Club President Gael Salzmann during a successful Club President’s Day Golf competition that raised an impressive £471 for Balloons charity.
Players were grateful for a welcome boost on the 8th tee, where President Gael kept competitors refreshed with cold drinks and pasties as they battled the heat on the course.
The closely fought Club President’s Salver competition produced an exciting finish, with Darryl Southgate claiming victory on 39 points, narrowly edging out Ann Ayerst on countback after both players finished level.
The day also featured some outstanding individual performances. Among the field was promising junior Grace Hong, who returned a remarkable 45 points, showcasing her growing talent. Meanwhile, Gill Whitehead etched her name into the record books by posting a superb 74 gross, setting a new course record on the day.
With excellent golf, generous fundraising and strong support for the Balloons charity, the event proved to be a memorable occasion for all involved.
Golf Captains’ Charity Golf Day for Balloons
£3,289.15 was raised for Balloons at the Captains Team Competition on Saturday 9th May, thanks to the incredible generosity of members through entry fees, donations and a successful silent auction. The day welcomed a field of 184 players who embraced the spirit of the event by dressing in blue and red to reflect the Balloons colours, enjoying a fantastic day of golf in warm, sunny conditions with plenty of great shots (and a few not-so-great ones!) shared across the course.
Special thanks go to Vic Fox for marshalling, Gael Salzmann, Suzanne Cornish, Lydia Powlesland and Nasim Hartmann for refreshments, John Parr, Dave Chappell and the greenkeeping team for an outstanding course setup, and Darren Everett and his team for organising the competition.
Congratulations also to the joint winners of the best dressed teams: Steve Sheldon, Seb Rothwell, Darren Thorpe & Neil Moxey, and Sally Rimmer, Caroline Harris, Elizabeth White & Kym Kortland.
On 26th April the team travelled to two time champions Bovey Castle for the first league game of the season. The team were ready for what was expected to be a really tough game on an interesting and challenging course with the weather improving the golf ball starting to roll and the greens hardening up.
Restoring the 1929 Steele Perkins Trophy
The Steele Perkins Trophy is one of the club’s most historic and challenging competitions, played in a foursomes knockout format. This means it is a pairs matchplay event where two players compete together, playing alternate shots using just one ball — a format that demands teamwork, strategy, and complete trust in your partner.
Dating back to 1929, the trophy is now approaching its centenary and has a rich history, originally contested as an open event before becoming a prestigious members’ competition in more recent years. In 2025, it was won by Charlie Kislingbury and Grant De Shapland, whose success helped draw renewed attention to its legacy.
Following discussions within the men’s committee, a decision was made to begin restoring some of the club’s historic trophies to their former glory, with the Steele Perkins Trophy chosen as the first project. Restoration work was expertly carried out by West Country Goldsmiths in Plymouth, ensuring this iconic piece of club history is preserved for future generations.
