Golf Captains’ Charity Golf Day for Balloons

£3,289.15 was raised for Balloons at the Captains Team Competition on Saturday 9th May, thanks to the incredible generosity of members through entry fees, donations and a successful silent auction. The day welcomed a field of 184 players who embraced the spirit of the event by dressing in blue and red to reflect the Balloons colours, enjoying a fantastic day of golf in warm, sunny conditions with plenty of great shots (and a few not-so-great ones!) shared across the course.

Special thanks go to Vic Fox for marshalling, Gael Salzmann, Suzanne Cornish, Lydia Powlesland and Nasim Hartmann for refreshments, John Parr, Dave Chappell and the greenkeeping team for an outstanding course setup, and Darren Everett and his team for organising the competition.

Congratulations also to the joint winners of the best dressed teams: Steve Sheldon, Seb Rothwell, Darren Thorpe & Neil Moxey, and Sally Rimmer, Caroline Harris, Elizabeth White & Kym Kortland.

East Devon League Match Report

Exeter took their East Devon League side to play at Sidmouth Golf Club on Sunday 10th May, our opponents were the current League Champions Downes Crediton.

Captain Broom said “Crediton put out a side of very low handicappers with a vast experience of matchplay, but our Exeter boys put up a great fight with some tight results. Fair play, Crediton pipped us 3-2 on the day. Massive congratulations to Kev Cole for his hole in one on the par 3 14th, amazing shot!”

 Lloyd Rowett Trophy

The Exeter Golf & Country Club team travelled to Bigbury Golf Club on Friday 1st May for the first leg of the Lloyd Rowett trophy.

The Lloyd Rowett Trophy is an annual matchplay contest played between Exeter Golf & Country Club and Bigbury Golf Club. The format is typically played over two legs, one at Bigbury and one at Exeter, with better-ball pairs from each club battling it out to decide the winner.
The weather was perfect with nice sunshine and a hint of breeze. Both teams were in great spirits and eager to get away.

The Exeter team was made up of:
Justin Powlesland & Ryan Pope – 6&4 W
Neil Whittaker & Dickie Holifield – 2&1 W
Jamie Broom & Pete Beaven – 1 down L
James Mullins & Andy Rockey – 3&2 W
Chris Hart & Chris Brooking – 2&1 – W
Iain Crombie & Alan Cleave – 2&1 L

The matches were all contested well with Exeter winning 4 and Bigbury winning 2. This gives Exeter a 4-2 lead coming in to the 2nd leg which will be played on 24th July.

Dartmoor League – Bovey Castle vs Exeter Golf & CC

On 26th April the team travelled to two time champions Bovey Castle for the first league game of the season. The team were ready for what was expected to be a really tough game on an interesting and challenging course with the weather improving the golf ball starting to roll and the greens hardening up.

The match featured some great golfers and pairings on both sides. Exeter put up a very good performance despite losing 3.5 to 1.5, with one of the Exeter’s loses coming on the last hole.

Captain Simon Courtney said ‘A great performance away from home and a fantastic win from John Bamford/Luke Hines.’ In the other matches Mark Champion/Ben Reynolds halved and there were defeats for Simon Courtney/Paul Fielder, Jeff Densham/James Kane and narrowly on the last Bobby Wickes/Jamie Broom.

The Captain added ‘With our new course bedding in, most of our first few games are all away so grabbing those away points is essential before we bring teams to Exeter to showcase our amazing course.’

Restoring the 1929 Steele Perkins Trophy

The Steele Perkins Trophy is one of the club’s most historic and challenging competitions, played in a foursomes knockout format. This means it is a pairs matchplay event where two players compete together, playing alternate shots using just one ball — a format that demands teamwork, strategy, and complete trust in your partner.

Dating back to 1929, the trophy is now approaching its centenary and has a rich history, originally contested as an open event before becoming a prestigious members’ competition in more recent years. In 2025, it was won by Charlie Kislingbury and Grant De Shapland, whose success helped draw renewed attention to its legacy.

Following discussions within the men’s committee, a decision was made to begin restoring some of the club’s historic trophies to their former glory, with the Steele Perkins Trophy chosen as the first project. Restoration work was expertly carried out by West Country Goldsmiths in Plymouth, ensuring this iconic piece of club history is preserved for future generations.
