Dartmoor League (DML) – Exeter v Okehampton
Parker Trophy – East Devon v Exeter
Exeter travelled to Woodbury Park Golf Club on 22 July to face East Devon in the quarter final of the Parker Trophy, with the team comprising Scott Collins & Alex Worthington, Simon House & Neil Woolfrey, and Adam Hull & Stuart Jose. Played in a scratch foursome’s matchplay format, the tie proved to be a closely contested battle throughout, with little separating the two sides all evening.
All three matches were tightly fought from the outset, with momentum swinging back and forth and neither team able to establish a significant advantage. The opening match remained finely balanced until East Devon managed to edge ahead over the closing holes, eventually securing a 3&2 victory on the 16th hole to give the East Devon a 1-0 lead in the overall match.
The second pairing also enjoyed a highly competitive encounter. With daylight fading rapidly, the match reached the 18th hole amid increasingly difficult playing conditions. Despite concerns over whether there was sufficient light to complete the hole, both pairs produced two excellent approaches before the remaining putts were conceded, resulting in a halved match. This left the overall score at East Devon 1, Exeter ½.
The final match proved to be an equally dramatic affair. Reaching the 18th hole with the result still in the balance, both teams battled on despite the light having deteriorated to what many would realistically consider unplayable conditions. Nevertheless, the players showed great determination to conclude the contest, with East Devon eventually claiming a 1-up victory on the final hole.
The result meant East Devon progressed with an overall 2 – ½ victory.
While the scoreline ultimately favoured East Devon, it does not fully reflect how closely contested the tie was. Exeter’s players performed superbly throughout, with every match remaining in the balance deep into the round. On another day, the narrow margins could easily have fallen in Exeter’s favour.
Congratulations to East Devon on their victory and well done to Team Exeter for a tremendous effort and a performance they can be proud of. The team represented Exeter Golf & Country Club with great determination, sportsmanship and resilience right to the very last putt.
Adam Hull & Rodin MacKay won 6&4
George Burningham & Wayne Chant won 3&2
Si House & Badder Alfaresi lost 2&1
Stu Jose & Fester lost 3&2
