Fundraising boost for Exeter YMCA

As their captaincy year reaches its last few weeks, the 2021/22 Golf Captains, Charles Kislingbury and Lizzie White are preparing to present their final fundraising cheque to the Exeter YMCA – their charity of the year.

The charity, which supports young homeless people, is celebrating the halfway point of their new accommodation project, Sidwell Studios.

The year-long fundraising by the golf members at Exeter Golf and Country Club has raised over £14,000 to date.

Thanks to community fundraising efforts across the city, an abandoned warehouse is being transformed into 26 self-contained studio apartments. Each apartment will provide a young person with a permanent, affordable home and support if needed.

The renovation of the disused warehouse near the city centre is the latest YMCA project to tackle the city’s worsening housing crisis. In the last year alone, the number of local young people struggling to find affordable housing after moving from supported accommodation has increased by 24%, to over 350 individuals.

The Sidwells Studio project is based upon building an inclusive community with a range of community groups, allotments and workshops designed to support the young people towards independent living.

The final charity cheque will be presented to the YMCA on Sunday 13 February after the Captains Challenge golf event.
