Double League and Cup Win for Women’s Squash

Exeter Golf and Country Club’s women’s squash team claimed an outstanding league and cup double by winning the Devon Cup final against Exeter University. This is the second year Exeter Golf and Country Club has claimed this pretigious victory; confirming the team’s position as the best in the county.

Team captain Mandie Rose reviewed last night’s final and the season overall:

“Ellie Bennett has gone from strength to strength and has perfected a wonderful serve. Despite a great effort she was beaten by a very strong University player. Lauren Brown has been incredibly consistent throughout the season and has won all of her matches. Yasmin Brown deserves a special mention for her grit and determination in beating the number one player in the deciding match of the tie to clinch the win for Exeter Golf and Country Club.”

Mandie said of the young team: “I am incredibly proud to be the captain of the women’s squash team… they have been exemplary in representing themselves, their team and Exeter Golf and Country Club.”

Huge congratulations to Lauren, Yamsin, Ellie and their inspirational team captain Mandie.

At the same time, Exeter Golf and Country Club’s men’s tennis B team faced a crucial promotion decider against Bovey Tracey. A 6-2 victory clinched promotion from division 2. It was the perfect conclusion to Jim Hsin’s excellent captaincy of the team before he passes on the reins to JP Smith and James Askew for the summer season.

James partnered James Fitzpatrick and got the team off to the perfect start as they secured a comfortable 6-1 6-0 victory against the second pair. With three points required to guarantee promotion, JP and Alun Evans battled superbly to beat the first pair 7-5 7-5 and put the team 4-0 up after the first rubbers. With the second round of matches split, the B team finished with their 7th win in 12 matches and they look forward to joining the A team in division 1 next winter.

Well done to everyone who has represented the team this season: Jim Hsin, JP Smith, James Askew, Jon Rucker, Alun Evans, James Fitzpatrick, James Gaisford, Mark Williams, Sam Wilton-Davies, Maurice Salzmann and Matt Cowley.
