The new Golf Captains, Steve Sheldon and Christine Norton were welcomed in by the golf members at the Golf AGMs this week, marking the start of their fundraising year. Steve and Chris have chosen Devon Freewheelers, aka Blood Bikes, as their charity of the year.Â
Devon Freewheelers Emergency Voluntary Service is a team of volunteer GMP trained Riders and GMP trained Drivers, Call Handlers and Fundraisers who are dedicated to providing a 24 hrs a day 7 days a week service. The charity supports the NHS in delivering essential whole blood, blood and other medical samples, medication, patient notes, medical equipment, tissue samples and donor breast milk to hospitals, air ambulances and other NHS establishments and even to patients homes throughout Devon.
Steve has been following the work of the Devon Freewheelers for a couple of years through Tanya, Spa Manager at Wear Park Spa, who’s husband volunteers as a motorcyclist. Having got to know Tanya and Jim, Steve became aware of the invaluable support the charity provides to the NHS and how their impact can help people of all ages and from all backgrounds when they’re most in need.Â
Steve and Chris plan to hold a series of events during their captaincy year including the Ladies and Men’s Pro Am events in May and June, the Ladies and Men’s Captaincy Days in June and July and Christmas golf event in December.Â
Steve said, “I am delighted to be working with this wonderful chartiy and that we are able to support all of the work it undertakes in our local communities. Having recently met the charity at their headquarters, I am also pleased that they have committed to actively get involved in our fundraising events thoroughout the year. We look forward to working alongside them and appreciate the support of our membership at these events”
