Exeter Golf and Country Club is now the first tennis club in Devon (south of Salisbury in fact!) to provide an on-court interactive AI-based technology to help players improve their tennis technique, skills, fitness and match play.
‘Wingfield’ – named after Walter Clopton Wingfield, who many credit as the founder of modern lawn tennis – is revolutionising amateur tennis by bringing professional-style innovative tracking technology and analytics to regular players and coaches to use on a day-to-day basis, via a simple to use app.
Created by ex-tennis professionals, including Maik Burlage, CEO and co-founder, who explains, “The Wingfield Box keeps track of the score, analyzes your strokes, detects your weaknesses and gives you feedback right after your match or your practice session. No more frustration or cluelessness because you can t́ figure out what went wrong! From the average speed of your serve to a point by point video analysis of your game, the system provides you with all the information you need to improve your game.”
How can Wingfield transform your game?
Located on Court 1 – one of the two new clay tennis courts at Exeter Golf and Country Club – the Wingfield box has replaced one of the net posts, which, with two high-speed cameras and an additional baseline camera, track all activities on court.
Thanks to smart video tools, you can also replay your sessions, receive feedback and statistics about your performance, and even filter points based on certain events. The Wingfield app – which is free to download will provide access to all of this to keep you motivated and improve your game.

What can Wingfield do?
Wingfield has four main modes; Freeplay, Video, Match and Drill.
Freeplay Mode
Freeplay – or training – mode helps players to understand what a coach sees on court. The video sequences provide visual feedback with analysis of shots, accuracy, speed and height, as well as qualitative feedback via slow-motion analysis.
Video Mode
In video mode, no stats are tracked – here it’s all about the video of your training session and primarily designed for practice or coaching with more than two players on the court or even two players on one side. For example…doubles in match play / doubles in practice (also during warm up) / baseline points with four players
Match Mode
A professional level insight to improve specifics of your game, helping you understand reasons for wins or losses with your serve or return rates, your success rate of net attacks, points won by rally length, accuracy of shot placement and even a heat map to illustrate levels of defensive v offensive play.
You can filter analysis by stroke or shot type and evaluate your play from one set to the next. Does the speed of your groundshots change throughout the game? The speed and height difference from your first serve to your second. This is a very useful tool to hone in on technique and tactics. You can also highlight clips to share with friends – when you score that perfect serve.
Drill Mode
Choose the drill you want to work on – specific shots (eg forehand cross), target accuracy, cardio fitness, beginners skills. Drill Mode provides measurable feedback to compare precision, speed, accuracy etc in a controlled environment, where you can reproduce clean shots or maintain focus on a specific goal. You can see progress – making it a great choice for beginners to practice without the pressure of other players. Feeling competitive? You can choose to rank against other players at the club too.
