The Racketball National Championships ran on the weekend of the 20th-22nd August at Edgbaston Priory Squash Club in Birmingham, and it brought two big wins for Exeter Golf and Country Club players.
Mike Harris and Ioan Sharpe both managed to secure their respective titles; Mike winning his 4th consecutive Men’s Open, and Ioan taking his 2nd Junior Boys U17 and U19 age group victories.
With players congregating from all over the UK there was a great variety of skill and ability on show with age groups running from Boys U15 up to Men’s O85s. This demonstrates the longevity of the game across the ages.
Ioan’s victories came after winning through in a group of 5 players. His standout match came against an opponent two years older than him in the BU19 final who he beat 11/8 in the 5th game after a gruelling 85-minute battle.
Mike managed to reach the final without dropping a game. He then matched up against long-time sparring partner and regular UK Racketball top player Luke Bishop. It was always going to be a closely contested match with Mike managing to see off Luke’s challenge by 3 games to 1 after one hour: 11/2, 9/11, 11/6, 11/2.
It was a fantastic effort by both players showcasing the strength of the game at the club. In addition to these wins, Devon also had further successes with the below Champions and Runners Up across some of the other categories:
Pete Hamlett (Torquay) Men’s O70s Runner Up
Andy Mitchell (Paignton) Men’s O65s Winner
Graham Holmes (Devon and Exeter) Men’s O65s Runner Up
Natalie Lawrence (Devon and Exeter) Ladies O35s winner and Open Runner Up
Caroline Curtis (Devon and Exeter) Ladies O40s winner
Congratulations to all!
