Exwick Tennis Club vs Exeter Golf and Country Club
On Sunday afternoon, Exwick Tennis Club and Exeter Golf and Country Club met in the second round of matches in the 2014 Devon Aegon Team Tennis 12 and under competition. In glorious sunshine, proceedings began with the doubles rubbers. The first pairs played out a close encounter which was won by the away pairing of Rio Turl and Marcus Kay who beat James Fitzpatrick and Jack Hannaford 6-3 6-4. The second pairs were involved in an epic encounter which saw the momentum change several times. The Exeter Golf and Country Club pair, of Zak Wilton-Davies and Oliver Newson, secured the first set in a tie-break before Edward Sowden and Sebbie Burrows fought back to level the tie for Exwick by taking the second set 6-3. To decide the rubber, the teams battled in a tight champions tie-break before Zak and Oliver prevailed 10-8.
After the close doubles rubbers, the first and second singles matches took to the court. Playing at number one, James and Rio produced some fantastic tennis in two close sets that saw Rio come through 7-5 7-6(8). Marcus fashioned a consistent performance to beat Jack in straight sets, 6-2 6-2 and give Exeter Golf and Country Club an unassailable 8-0 lead. The match was concluded by the final singles rubbers. These saw Zak beat Edward 6-2 6-2 and Sebbie defeat Oliver 6-2 6-3.
Following an afternoon of excellent tennis played in a great spirit by all players, the 10-2 victory for Exeter Golf and Country Club sent them to the top of the division ahead of the return fixtures in the second half of the season.
