A tradition dating back through the 81 year history of Exeter Golf and Country Club took place on Sunday 28th November with the annual drive in and lunch to celebrate the inauguration of the new Golf Captains.
The newly elected Golf Captains, Paul Smale and Viv Worthington were welcomed on board to mark the start of the new golf year.
With friends, family and fellow golf members present, the new Golf Captains started their annual captaincy with a tee off outside the historic Georgian mansion house.
Their joint captaincy has an unusual twist in that Paul and Viv share the same birthday, along with several members of each family.
Both Paul and Viv are long standing members of Exeter Golf and Country Club, with Paul having been a member for over 46 years, since he was 5 years old, and Viv joining when she moved from Bolton with her husband Roger 16 years ago. The joint captains have selected the Torbay Holiday Helpers Network as their charity of the year and hope to be able to raise funds through a number of events ranging from Pro Am golf events to a sky dive.
Paul Smale, who is also a Director of Pavey Group said, “I feel incredibly privileged and honoured to be chosen as captain of such a prestigious club as Exeter Golf and Country Club. As the club has been such a huge part of my life, I am delighted to be able to spend a year as Captain, raising funds for The Torbay Holiday Helpers Network, and in raising the profile of the golf section of the club.
Pavey Group are supporting Paul in his captaincy and are sponsoring a Charity Golf Day in May in aid of Torbay Holiday Helpers Network. The charity is close to Paul’s heart, having known charity organiser Luke Tillen for many years and witnessed his commitment to providing free holidays and days out for families of or for seriously ill or bereaved children. Over 120 businesses are now involved in the charity and as a collective have given away over 90 free holidays in the past 14 months.
Viv, who has known Paul throughout her membership of Exeter Golf and Country Club , is delighted to be sharing her captaincy year with him and also to be supporting such a worthwhile cause.
Viv Worthington said, “I am honoured and excited to be voted as Ladies Golf Captain of Exeter Golf and Country Club. I have been playing golf since the age of 9, when I used to go to the golf course with my father. For me, this is such an honour and I am very much looking forward to showing my commitment to the club and our charity of the year, which will quite possibly include a skydive with Gary Milne, Exeter Golf and Country Club’s Golf Professional!”
Viv will be organising a Ladies’ Pro Am golf event next year which will be sponsored by Audi South West and Queen Street Carpets.
Viv continues, “ Both Paul and I are hoping to continue the success Exeter Golf and Country Club enjoyed in 2010 both with regards to golf events and fund raising.”
