Every year a gym member is selected as the Gym Member of the Year recognising their achievements, successes, input or actions.
The 2016 Gym Member of the Year was announced at the Fitness Section AGM on 1 March. John Harley was presented with the award by Club President, Kevin Butler. John was chosen by the Fitness Commitee for his voluntary support to the younger gym members. John’s enthusiasm for fitness and encouraging others is consistent. He is often seeing giving guidance and advice to younger members using the free weights. As a teacher, John finds it quite natural to want to share his knowledge.
John said, “I have been a member of the gym since it opened in 1989. I’m really surprised to have been chosen for this award. I work as a teacher so my development skills come fairly naturally. People seem to appreciate my help and I am always pleased to see gym users, especially the younger ones, making progress towards their fitness goals.”
John is described by Gym Manager, Lee Cooke as being like an extra member of the team and he welcomes John’s support given the importance of using the fitness equipment safely.
John was also part of the gym refurbishment project which took place in 2012. Club President, Kevin Butler recollects, “John was really helpful during the redevelopment of the gym. He is very knowledgeable about use of the free weights and anaerobic exercise. I have known him since I joined Exeter Golf and Country Club 12 years ago and can confirm the award of Gym Member of the Year is very well deserved.”
Fitness Committee Chairman, Rab Cross agrees and said “John regularly gives guidance and advice to users of the free weights equipment, especially the younger ones, and the Fitness Committee wanted to recognise that service to the Club.”
