Greetings from Gary
First Professional Win
Our new professional, Steve Buzza, tasted victory for the first time in the professional ranks at Churston Golf Club in last week’s Devon PGA Winter Medal. Steve was the only player on the day to break par, with his score of 69 good enough for a one shot winning margin.
Steve has only played in 4 of a possible 7 events, but strong performances in his previous three have put him into tenth position in the current order of merit standings. Tied 6th is Steve’s worst result, and he will be hoping to continue this good form when the next competition is played at Exeter in a couple of weeks time.
Well done, Steve!
Recognition from England Golf
Last week Phil Parker was presented with the Gerald Micklem Award at the England Golf AGM, which is presented to a person who has made an outstanding contribution to further the interest of amateur golf in England. Phil has had recognition for all he has done for the game at both County and National level, and this was highlighted by John Flanders, who made the presentation. Congratulations, Phil!

Ladies 4 Ball Team Stableford
Last Tuesday’s team event produced some low scoring with the in-form team, consisting of Barbara Nute, Gill Newbery, Annie Norman and Janet Russell, winning the event with 84 pts. This score was good enough for a one point victory over second placed Jill Searle, Marilyn Jones, Liz Neill and Ann Harris-Deans. In third position with 80 pts, and completing the prize winners, weas the team of Jackie Follett, Linda Ellis, Dot Butler and Janet Copp.
Mail on Sunday
Exeter are through to the 3rd round of the National Mail on Sunday competition after a narrow victory away at Axe Cliff. It is a course where local knowledge is a big advantage, but this proved no problem for our team, 4 of which had never even set foot on the course before the match. Darren Thorpe secured the 3-2 win with his victory in the last match. Well done to all on the team!
Saturday’s 1-2-3 Stableford was won by the ‘experienced’ Martin Buzza and his team of Eddie Stapleton, Chris Curtis and Steve Boyd with an incredible 89 points. Runners up, and in the frame for the second week running, were Ray Banfield, Colin Wayman, Cliff Nightingale and Alan Wilson with 88 points on a better back nine. The course, I am told, is in excellent condition, especially the greens. The comment I keep hearing is that people have never seen the greens looking so good at this time of year. Well done to John Parr and his team!
