This past Saturday 73 pairs competed in the annual Men’s Invitation. John Parr again like so many events this year had the course looking in prestige condition with many of the visiting guests commenting on the quality of the greens. Due to the bout of good weather we have experienced in recent weeks the course has started to firm; this combined with the blustery conditions present made for a great test of golf. In these conditions there is a real premium on hitting fairways to gain the needed control of the golf ball and going on the scoring, this was certainly achieved by many of the pairs on the day.
In sixth place Oli Cowl with his father John came in with 40 points, beaten by Graham Crocker and Jon Veale on a better back nine for fifth. The Fricker combination of Darren and Paul came fourth with 41, beaten again on a better back nine by another family pair of Mike and Tony Jordan for third. Andy Knight and his partner, Fingle Glen member Jamie Hoskins were runners up with 42 points but were edged out by a single point by the veteran Adrian Hansell and his partner John Skinner. Congratulations. Graham Crocker added the nearest the pin to his fifth place with Mark Dunsford (East Devon) getting the longest drive down the 18th. I would just like to thank our Golf Manager on behalf of the members that played on the day for his hard work that resulted in a fabulous day that ran smoothly.
This Wednesday the Stableford was won by Alan Friend with a fine 39 points. This was good enough to beat Tom Baillie and Pepa Luxa by a single point with Tom coming second on a better back nine. In division one Dave Adams won with 37 points, beating both Ross Hollingdale and Mark Hunt by a single point. Ross in a close day of scoring and like division two came second on a better back nine.
In the last men’s committee meeting it was decided that from next month there will be two Stableford events per month instead of the current one. The extra dates for your diary are 8th June, 27th July, 24th August and 14th September. These will still be played in groups of four and are still optional.
Ladies’ Express & Echo Foursomes
Anne Norman and Anita Harris won Tuesday’s foursome event with 40 pts beating Lyne Beevers and Debi More by 3 points. The Express & Echo is a qualifier so I would like to congratulate Anne and Anita on their performance and wish them the best of luck for the regional final which will take place later on in the year. Dot Butler and Jan Brown-King came third beating Jenny Pullen and Niki Dixie on a better back nine.
