The Devon Amateur
This past weekend, the Devon Amateur was contested at Tavistock Golf Club. Devon’s flagship event is played over three days, consisting of 36 holes of strokeplay on the Friday (Gold Medal) and matchplay on the Saturday and Sunday. Exeter was represented by 4 members with Harrison Greenberry qualifying in the top bracket with Steve Buzza and Jon Mitchell qualifying for the Plate. Harry and Jon both lost to eventual semi-finalists in closely fought matches. Steve won his first three matches to get into the Plate final. However, he lost on the 18th when his opponent chipped in from behind the green. Leon Fricker from Yelverton was the winner of the Amateur Championship beating David Blick, winner of Friday’s Gold Medal strokeplay qualifier.

At the closing presentation, the Devon side to compete in the forthcoming South West Six Counties was announced. This is the biggest honour, in representing the County. I’m pleased to report that due to their fanstastic play through the beginning of 2011, Max Burrow has been selected for his fourth appearance at South West Week, with Harrison Greenberry making his debut. Congratulations to you both!

Captain Pro Matches
It was 29 years ago since this last match played together. We were almost Juniors then! Our latest challengers, Geoff Pascoe and Chris Gaite took on the Captain and ‘Yours Truly’. One thing is certain, they are as wild now, as they were then – on the golf course that is! All I can say about this match is that our one hundred percent record is still intact! There might be a bit more snow on the mountain, but the game was just as competitive as it was 30 years ago!
