Nexus Tennis Finals – home win for Ed

The 2022 16U Boys Nexus Junior Tour concluded on Saturday afternoon as the top eight players contested in the Finals at Exeter Golf and Country Club.

Players representing six clubs (EGCC, Exmouth, Ivybridge, David Lloyd, Sidmouth and Totnes) qualified for the finals having taken part in events across the county from the beginning of the year.

Huge congratulations to Exeter Golf and Country Club member Edward Guy who won the Finals having produced some fantastic tennis throughout the day and held his nerve in three tough matches.

Congratulations also to Arthur (Exmouth) who finished top of the leaderboard having won an impressive 25 of his 27 matches across the season.

The quality of tennis was high from the outset. Two quarter-finals were decided in championship tie-breaks. Serban (David Lloyd) held his nerve to upset the leaderboard winner Arthur 4-1 2-4 10-7. In the other half Kolo (Totnes) prevailed in another evenly matched game against James (Sidmouth) 4-3 0-4 10-3.

Both semi-finals could have gone either way. In the top half Serban won a crucial second set tie-break against Ashley (EGCC) to book his place in the final by winning 4-1 4-3. Edward Guy (EGCC) was also involved in a tense tie-break, this time in the first set as he came through against Kolo 4-3(6) 4-2.

It was fitting that the final between Serban and Edward was an incredibly even contest which came down to another championship tie-break with the momentum switching several times. Edward managed to overcome an early deficit to claim victory 2-4 4-2 10-7.

At the same time as the final, the longest match of the Finals took place in one of the play-offs between Jenson (Exmouth) and Angus (Ivybridge). It took three close tie-breaks to separate the pair with Jenson ultimately winning 4-3(6) 3-4(5) 10-7.

Following the conclusion of the matches sponsor Stuart Wilson, managing director of Nexus Open Systems, congratulated the competitors for reaching the finals and displaying some brilliant tennis with impeccable sportsmanship throughout.

Thanks to Nexus Open Systems for their continued support of the Tour. The winter season will see a series of one-off events across the county. The leaderboard will return for another season in January 2023.
