Greetings from Gary Thursday, 02 February 2012
Last Tuesday, the ladies section played an American Foursomes. With cold, wintery conditions, only the brave ventured onto the course. The in-form team of Annie Norman and Gill Newbery made it two wins from two with a fantastic 25pts in this 13 holes event. One shot further back, and in second place, was the pair of Shirley Mason and Gill Richards. This score was good enough to beat Liz White and Marian Stanford into third position on count back.
The men’s Saturday competition was also an American Foursomes format, and although the day was much drier than on the Tuesday, the weather was still freezing, resulting in a number of temporary greens. The pair of Jeff Clements and Paul Easterbrook won the event with 45pts. Their round was a great example of ‘a game of two halves’. A steady opening 19pts on the front nine was made to look quite average as they scored an unheard of 26 pts on the back nine. This consisted of 3 four pointers. This fantastic score was good enough for a one point victory over father and son pair, Pete and Josh Money. Chris Gaite and Tom Bailie continued their good form, coming in third position with 44 points, unfortunately losing out on count back. The Rocky brothers, Andy and Chris, stole fourth position with 43 points, beating off a further four groups that had the same score.
On a cold, grey day the men played their first round match at Exminster Golf Club, and were victorious by 3 1/2 to 1 1/2. Well done to the team that consisted of Darren Thorpe, Harvey Jones, Alistair Jack, Andrew Jack and Steve Deveill. We are now awaiting the draw of the next round – hopefully it will be at home. Well done, team!
