Squash tournament

On the weekend of the 9th and 10th April, Exeter Golf and Country Club hosted its inaugural Professional Squash tournament, sponsored by Maze Property Solutions. This was run alongside an Open Graded event for all Adult and Junior players sponsored by Karakal Racket Sports. This was the largest competition the Squash section at the club has run, with in the region of 150 squash matches being played over the weekend.

Players from all over the South West came to compete in the tournaments, with counties such as Cornwall, Somerset, Avon and Hampshire all being well represented in the Graded event alongside lots of local Devon players. The youngest player at the Graded was 10 years old, with the oldest being in their 60’s, meaning there was a great variety of standards and styles of game being played across the two days.

The Professional event retained an international entry with Polish, Egyptian, Dutch and Guatemalan Pros all looking to battle it out for vital PSA points to boost their world ranking. In the end, the final of the Professional event came down to two English players, the top two seeds of the event Mike Harris and Kyle Finch. Mike is the Exeter Golf and Country Club Head Pro with a world ranking of 215, Kyle is currently ranked at 233 in the world and rising fast. It was a great battle with the lead exchanging hands constantly throughout all 5 of the hard fought games, with Mike eventually taking the match 3/2 and 11/8 in the last, after over an hour of brutal squash.

It was great to see both of the events so well supported both by the players who came to compete, but also by the spectators who came and packed out the seating and the gallery for the finals evening on the Sunday. It has certainly set out some great prospects for bigger and better events in the future! A big thank you to sponsors Maze Property Solutions and Karakal Racket Sports for their support toward the prizes for the events, we are looking forward to running the next ones already!
